New Authority, New Opportunities
The Aruba Fair Trade Authority (AFTA) has been operational since the beginning of January 2024, coinciding with the entry into force of Aruba’s competition ordinance. With this new legislation, new rules and a new supervisory authority have been introduced. AFTA aims to introduce itself to a broad audience in order to establish its presence and mission. During its presentation, AFTA will outline the new rules and highlight the opportunities they bring. As AFTA’s primary responsibility is to monitor and enforce these rules, it will also address its approach and the implications for businesses operating in Aruba.
Martijn Snoep
Martijn Snoep gained broad experience as a lawyer with a focus on competition law throughout a significant part of his professional career. In addition, he has acquired diverse experience in leadership and supervisory roles within organizations led by professionals in the legal, governmental, academic, and cultural sectors.
Martijn’s first notable leadership role was as Managing Partner of De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek for a period of six years, during which he led a group of approximately 700 lawyers, including 60 partners, and played a crucial role in developing and implementing the firm’s new strategic direction.
He currently holds a comparable position as Chairman of the Board of the Autoriteit Consument & Markt (ACM), an independent administrative authority in the Netherlands responsible for enforcing competition and consumer protection laws and regulating the energy, telecommunications, and digital sectors. With a staff of 650 professionals, Martijn is actively involved in executing ACM’s new strategy and communicating it to its key stakeholders and within Dutch society. Since December 2023, Martijn has also been a board member of the Aruba Fair Trade Authority.
