If the company sells gift cards or gift vouchers, the conditions for the use of these must be clear. This includes the validity period.
Rules for gift cards
Rules for gift cards
- If no expiry date is stated, the gift card is in principle valid indefinitely.
- Exceptions apply if the store no longer exists or if the specific product or service is no longer available.
- If only an issue date is stated, the gift card is valid for five years from that date.
After five years, the company no longer has to accept the gift card. - If both an issue date and an expiry date are stated, the company may decide whether the consumer can still use the gift card after the expiry date.
- A gift card must be valid for at least one year.
- A shorter validity period is only allowed if it fits the type of product or service. For example: A gift card issued in November for a Christmas package may be valid until the 24th of December.
